Two of my favorite people, and a microphone. Can you imagine if James Figurine produced a Lady Gaga Album? Holy shit, madness. Image via blogs.laweekly.com

Health: Crystal deodorant is AMAZING

Image via shewearspants.com

I’ve been looking for a good deodorant for as long as I can remember. What’s a sweaty bitch to do? I’ve tried them all! All the normal deodorants (Speedstick, Dove, etc.) smelled nice but sort of lacked any kind of drying method that deodorant is supposed to inhibit. Plus their use of aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum zirconium worries me, because they are linked to Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer, both of which are in my family. Scary stuff, seeing as deodorant is something everyone (except those darn hippies!) uses everyday.

I’ve also tried the organic-y and natural “just deodorant” kinds too. I have to say those did not go well either. I think “just deodorant” deodorant is for people who don’t actually sweat and wanna feel like everyone else, so they slab some organic paste on and feel grown up (jealz!). But for real, I smelled worse after wearing Tom‘s all day long than if I hadn’t worn anything at all. So did all of my friends who tried it. It is awful. If you sweat, do not buy Tom’s.

Cringingly, I got prescription deodorant in middle school that was a higher dose of aluminum chlorohydrate. It was itchy, I had to put it on overnight and wash it off in the morning. Kind of a task to not sweat as much. Plus with all the modern day worries about aluminum in deodorant causing cancer and a bunch of other ailments, it doesn’t seem worth it to stop sweating. (Wouldn’t it be great if we just let ourselves sweat! It’s engrained to be embarrassing, which is lame because it’s just like pooping. Everybody does it! Society and customs are such a drag sometimes.)

Down on my luck and about to concede that I was going to be a sweaty gal for the rest of my days, I ran across a last ditch effort: Crystal Body Deodorant. It was in the corner of the deodorant aisle looking a little neglected. I saw the pink breast cancer ribbon on it, and then the price because it was cheaper than regular deodorant. So I bought it, hoping it would at least be better than the Tom’s debacle.

What it is

It is a natural mineral salt. Really. Check it from the website:

“Crystal deodorants – the all-natural deodorant alternative to chemically laden commercial deodorants, are composed of mineral salts, which form a topical layer on the skin. While most deodorants mask odor with scents or fragrances, Crystal deodorants actually prevent body odor from beginning by creating a thin barrier above the skin so that bacteria cannot form. Available in both unscented and lightly scented versions, Crystal deodorants are hypoallergenic, non-sticky, non-staining, dry instantly and leave no white residue. Furthermore, Crystal deodorants contain no artificial coloring, chemicals, dyes or alcohol. They contain NO harmful aluminums, are not tested on animals, and are safe for the environment.”

I have never had a deodorant that has worked this well. Seriously. There is no sweat, and if there is it’s very little and not smelly like Tom’s makes you, even the unscented kind (I was disappointed about Tom’s). I have the Crystal roll-on and I love it. Check out their products here. I’ve been using it for about 3 weeks and it’s been amazing. It’s nice to know that there is a deodorant product out there that doesn’t feel like you’re rubbing future medical bills under your armpits. Definitely try it if you’re in the market for some new deodorant, or want to try something that doesn’t include aluminum chlorohydrate.

This is cool: The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl

Yeah girl, your webisodes rock. Image via ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com

My great friend Kayla just introduced me to these little jems of joy. I want to spoon cuddle J (main character), write lyrics about shitty ex-boyfriends and stay up all night talking for hours together.

According to the ABG website, there are plans to turn this web series into a half hour sitcom! How cool! I love how Youtube opens doors for creative and talented folk like Issa Rae to get the attention they deserve.

Check out the first two videos. They are short, sweet and will make you fall in love with the best ABG. The car thing in episode one happened to me today.

Forever Young: Pay phones

20120522-163658.jpg

Remember being stranded at the mall in the late 90s, and only feeling security in the fact that you had a quarter and there was a machine that would take it in exchange for one grim, helpless phone call? Then there was 1-800-CALLATT which was just a big fuck you to whoever you had to call.

Plus remember how scary it was to hear one ring?! who’s calling me?! Who knows I’m here????

Some of these unique devices still exist. Even more rare is to find one that still works AND doesn’t have a clipped cord. It’s a historical, technological monument!

But really. Thank God we have cell phones people. Just thinking about not having one gives me anxiety.

Fashion: I wish I could wear this to a party

Image via nastygal.com

Sure, you could put a skirt over it and it would be a perfectly acceptable outfit. But what’s the fun in that?! Everyone SHOULD see your wedgies. It’s a statement. Wedgies + Fashion Summer 2012. It’s a thing. Really.

I love this body suit so much. And it’s only $38 which really isn’t bad for something so fucking cool. YUM!

Also I might have to start hookin’ for gift cards to Nasty Gal.

PS, her blush is awesome. Any idea of the color?

Television: Girls “The Return”

Look at that nice, normal date at a pizza parlor. Way to go, Hannah!

The 6th episode of Girls is my favorite to date. Written by Lena Dunham and Judd Apatow, the story delves into Hannah’s character as she goes home to her parents house in Michigan for the weekend. There she reconnects with a really cute guy she went to high school with who is a pharmacist, learns that a classmate disappeared on vacation a la Natalee Holloway, and ends up going on a date with said pharmacist to a benefit to raise money for a PI for the missing girl.

The Date

Skipping over minor details, everything about the date with the pharmacist Eric was a refreshing reminder that not all guys are complete weirdo jerkfaces. I’m so happy for Hannah. It’s so nice to go on a date with a nice person, instead of the usual crazies that always end up stuck on you like a piece of city gum on your shoe.

The Parents
She had a “Party Girl” poster in her high school bedroom. A-MA-ZING.

The interactions with her parents resonates with me and presumably all of my friends. It’s so nice to go home, give your parents a good hug, sleep in your old bedroom and raid the fridge at night because you don’t have to ration your meals. They ask about jobs, wanna hang out with Hannah and are parent-y. There’s also some sex in the shower that goes awry (when isn’t there sex in the shower that doesn’t go awry?!), but I’ll leave that shocker for you if you haven’t seen it yet.

This show just keeps getting better and better. I love the focus on Hannah. It kind of felt like when your friend invites you home, and you get to see all of their childhood/ middle school/ high school things and get drunk with their parents. It’s so fun. It will be cool to see if they dive into the other characters. Jessa plz!!!!

Party Girl. Fuckin’ right.

You HAVE to watch Party Girl. HAVE TO.

Music: The amazing Jimmy Tamborello tweets new music plans!!

Sweet beard, sweet tunes. Image via undertheradarmag.com

Maybe you don’t know him by his government name, Jimmy Tamborello. But you soon will. First and most famously, he’s half of the dreamy electro duo The Postal ServiceYou know their songs, even if you don’t know them. They’re that fucking good. Jimmy T is also a musical wizard behind many other projects: Dntel, Figurine, James Figurine (my fave), Golden Hits, Dublab as well as sparkling on other creative ventures elsewhere. Check out his site here. Go on! Get meandering!

Last week, fresh off another weekly/daily listen of anything Mistake, Mistake, Mistake, Mistake, I decided to tweet the ol’ fella my undying love for that album:

Along with a new Dntel album, Aimlessness, a mixtape (download it fo free below!), and probably 20 billion other amazing projects, JT hints at a new Figurine album and hopefully hopefully hopefully a new James Figurine possibility all the way in 2016. So far away, but it’s good to wait for things that will blow your mind, like summer sausage or fresh pants out of the dryer. I’m in.

I’m not sure how much Jimmy Tamborello-flavored music I’ve listened to. I have one Figurine album, The Heartfelt, that is electronic music with lyrics that talk about technology, space and love, in an oddly poetic way. It’s a great album to listen to on your back, in the grass, with headphones and a sky full of stars. Mistake… is in my iTunes, as well as a couple Dntel albums/EPs and of course The Postal Service.

There’s just something about the movement in his compositions that you want to follow the whole way through to the end of the album. It’s like watching a chef cook a meal, except this time the chef is behind a midi, mixers and whatever the fuck else a musical chef needs to make his melodic meal. He throws shit in here, stirs in some awesome shit over there, sprinkles a pinch of “whoa that was fucked up but I liked it” and tops it off with “This is blowing your mind.” Except at the end of the album, there’s no food to eat (come onnnn technology!) Just a cool oratory experience and whatever the fuck is left in your part-time job refrigerator.

Point being: Check out one of my favorite music people in the whole entire world. And get an album if you like it. You know my fave already. Dntel is ambient-y and electro-y, Figurine is a musical adventure and James Figurine (has goddess Jenny Lewis on a track) is an ice cream cone in summer, under the shade of a tree. The rest of his work you and I can discover togethz, like a summer reading list but musical!

Take a gander at this James Figurine song and below the new Dntel mixtape that is available to download for free, luvaz.
