Die Antwoord is super weird and supa fascinante

Die Antwoord consider themselves to be a “futuristic rap-rave crew from South Africa who represent a fresh new style called ZEF.”

The first time I watched a Die Antwoord video was their video for “Evil Boy“. Like probably everyone who watches anything Die Antwoord-related for the first time, I had absolutely no idea what to think or say (which is rare in the day and age).

Pure astonishment and shock resonated for minutes, hours: I didn’t know whether to be frightened, excited, applaud their commitment to performance, or never watch anything on the internet ever again.

Yep, Yo-Landi wearing rats. Photo via fokyeahyolandi.tumblr.com

Yes, they are seriously weird as shit, as most of their music videos come off as multiple scenes from nightmares spanning your entire life. You can’t tell if they are seriously talented freaks who are performance geniuses, or they’re going to murder us and wear our skins as coats to their next show. But isn’t that part of the fun?!

Ninja, the rapper in the group, had this to say in a Spin magazine interview about the is-it-real aspect that surrounds Die Antwoord:

This American reporter was telling us that reality TV makes Americans care about if things are real or not. But you watch reality TV and you get a dull feeling in your balls. You watch us and it’s thrilling. There’s a sweet analogy for how musicians can think about this: People are unconscious and you have to use your art as a shock machine to wake them up. Some people are too far gone. They’ll just keep asking, “Is it real? Is it real?” That’s dwanky. That’s a word we have in South Africa, “dwanky.” It’s like lame. “Is it real?” Dwanky. You have to be futuristic and carry on. You gotta be a good guide to help people get away from dull experience. Don’t be rude to the people who don’t get it. It’s better to be nice to those retards.

Ninja is right. They are genuinely the only group I’ve ever seen that if I saw them in public, I’d be equal parts mesmerized and scared as fuck. Exhilarating.

TEN$ION

They even turned down a million dollar guarantee from Interscope records concerning their newly released album Ten$ion. They explain what went down:

So anyway… Interscope offered us a bunch of money again to release our new album TEN$ION. But this time, they also tried to get involved with our music, to try and make us sound like everyone else out there at the moment. So we said: ‘U know what, rather hang on to your money, buy yourself something nice…we gonna do our own thing. Bye bye’.”

Their latest album Ten$ion was released on their own independent label ZEF Recordz. Die Antwoord even performed on David Letterman.

Check out their latest video off of Ten$ion for their song ” I Fink U Freeky”. You may be scared, but get over it.

Lady Gaga reveals the Born This Way Ball poster and stage

The 2012 Born This Way Ball

Right off the heels of winning Tour of the Year from the Pollstar Awards for Lady G’s Monsterball Tour (which I saw in Chicago 2010 and it was amazing!), Mother Monster has released the official poster of The Born This Way Ball. The 2012-2013 tour is rumored to keep our Lady busy for 2 years and make over 420 tour stops. That is some serious touring, folks. To the delight of us all, MM has also released a drawing of what the stage and arenas will look like.

Lady G says:

To give you a bit of insight on the design of my new tour, the central area within the stage will be known as “The Monster Pit.” “The Monster Pit” is General Admission only, and Little Monsters unlock it when they arrive to the arena or stadium. Entry to “The Monster Pit” is relegated to the fans who have arrived first, waited all night, + dressed to “Ball.”

I SO SO SO want to get Monster Pit tickets (let’s hope it doesn’t turn out like the Florence + the Machine ticket waiting fiasco).

The stage looks beautiful, like a medieval princess pop star singing to her beloved commoners. And she even has designed a circular stage so she can go out amongst her fans. There really is more “front row seating” than normal which is WAY WAY cool.

Oh please oh please oh please let me get tickets to this. I’m starting to save RIGHT NOW.

Ryan Gosling Tumblr Luv

Ryan Gosling is the internet’s little prince. If it weren’t for cats and pictures of cute animals, he just might be numero 1. Luckily, some dedicated Ryan Gosling fans have spent their time creating amazing tumblrs in honor of the cute, sensitive and very talented actór.

Ryan wins. Sorry puppy. I feel terrible.

Fashion: Geri Halliwell’s Union Jack line

Yes please! Photo via Getty Images

YES YES YES YES!!!!

My 8-year-old Christmas list consisted of witch’s potion, magic spells, and Spice Girls clothes. Well, one of them has come true. FINALLY.

Geri Halliwell, formerly Ginger Spice or the one who left the group and subsequently ended my childhood innocence, is coming out with her own line of Union Jack clothes for Next. “The Union Jack dress was my favorite stage outfit and with everything that is happening this year such as the Olympics and the Jubilee it just felt the right time to design an updated version of the dress for my range with Next.”

They BETTER sell this stuff at H&M or Urban Outfitters. It’s our collective childhood dreams come true. Now all we need are some sick platforms and 4 friends to get this shit started. Girl Power, woooooo!!!!!!

Can we get a big designer to do an actual Spice Girls-inspired line? I would spend my yearly salary on it. Which isn’t saying much, but I would regardless.

Remember how everyone always wanted to be Baby? I had a sports bra so I had to be Sporty. She’s great and all, but I’m girly as fuck so it didn’t gel. But if you had a blonde friend, they “had to be baby”. Jerks! And now I just want to be all of them. So I will be. Ahh. the joys of growing up.

Here’s “Say You’ll Be There” for your nostalgic enjoyment.

It Girl: Rooney Mara

Our new favorite it girl, Rooney Mara in Vogue. Photo via vogue.com

Things are only getting better for Rooney Mara. Not only is she an Oscar nominee for her portrayal as Lisbeth Salander in Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but her family’s football team the New York Giants just won the Superbowl. Oh, and her fashion choices at awards season have her in just about ever fashion magazine and blog imaginable.

If that show “Best Week Ever” was still on, she would definitely be having it (waaaaay over the New York Giants even, because that game was boring as shit and got upstaged by the Queen herself, Madonna). Or at least she is having a best 3 month arch. Now all she needs is to meet the man of her dreams who is nothing like any famous person ever (because they all get divorced and that’s not the fairytale!), win the Best Actress Oscar, and be on every fashion magazine across the world. And solve cancer. With her cheekbones. And edgy style.

I also really like that she was the girl who turned down Zuckerberg in The Social Network, because he seems like the kind of person who should be dumped. (Keep selling our info, you billionaire hussy!)

She even got all those piercings for her role in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, including getting her nipple pierced. It’s so refreshing to know that out of the billions of flash-in-the-pan, up-and-coming celebrity actresses, one of them is un-vainly capable of actually committing to the role fully, without nudity and hairstyle clauses. Commitment is so fucking hot.

At the annual Oscars nominees luncheon (oh to by a fly on that wall), Mara had this to say about keeping her nipple piercing. “I don’t want to re-pierce it should we do the other two films.” Hot! I wish I had a work obligation to get a nipple piercing. Some girls have all the luck.

It is also impressive that her most famous character to date, Lisbeth Salander, is echoing throughout the promotion of the movie and awards season. You can see Lisbeth influence her hair, wardrobe and attitude throughout various appearances. Her appearance is becoming a sort of parallel reality with her character, which is an amazing way to promote the movie and her career as an all-encompassing actress.

Her next big big big event will be the Academy Awards (one of my favorite nights of the year. So many celebs, who’s gonna be the shining stahhhh?!) I, along with everyone starved for a not drug-addicted person to watch in Hollywood, am very excited to see what Mara will wear to the Academy Awards airing February 26th. Good luck, gurlfren.
