Get lost in synth.

Ugh. Nice one, music industry. As if the original album didn’t make enough money, Katy Perry and her money hungry friends are “re-releasing” her double-platinum album Teenage Dream. This is exactly like “re-releasing” Beauty and the Beast in 3-D, so some execs somewhere can make a shit ton of money off of them. Neat!

I like Katy Perry. I do. T.G.I.F. is mah jam in the car. But this deluxe edition with only 3 extra songs is weird, especially in the day and age of digital downloads. Who needs two copies of the same songs? Really! There will be three extra songs on the “deluxe” version: “E.T.” featuring Kanye West (which is a total rip off of T.A.T.U.’s “All The Things She Said“), an acoustic version of “The One That Got Away” (or, the song she needs to be number one to beat Michael Jackson’s record) and “T.G.I.F. (Last Friday Night) featuring Missy Eliot (ok, I’d pay the 99 cents for this one).

We all know the music industry is soooo bleak. Adele practically owned 2011 with her album 21, to which nobody could compete against. But really, I don’t know anyone who is that big of a Katy Perry fan to buy practically the same album twice, when you could just buy the 1 song with Missy Eliot (where’ve you been girl!?) that hasn’t been released yet, for 99 cents. I mean, especially for us poor-ish 20 somethings, buying the one song vs copies of the other songs we already have just makes sense.
This is one of those times where the music industry sadly and shockingly hasn’t quite caught up with the times, because nobody buys CDs. And if we do take our time to go to the store and physically buy the CD, it’s for our soul-mate favorite musical artist, not copies of a Katy Perry CD.
Icelandic electronica. This song is the best song to play in your car when you wanna belt out that you “don’t need no man!”
Fucking awesome.
Get their song “Hideaway” for free via their Facebook page, once you ‘like’ them. But of course!
Don’t you just want to dress up and dance with them next to gas tanks?!

Die Antwoord consider themselves to be a “futuristic rap-rave crew from South Africa who represent a fresh new style called ZEF.”
The first time I watched a Die Antwoord video was their video for “Evil Boy“. Like probably everyone who watches anything Die Antwoord-related for the first time, I had absolutely no idea what to think or say (which is rare in the day and age).
Pure astonishment and shock resonated for minutes, hours: I didn’t know whether to be frightened, excited, applaud their commitment to performance, or never watch anything on the internet ever again.

Yes, they are seriously weird as shit, as most of their music videos come off as multiple scenes from nightmares spanning your entire life. You can’t tell if they are seriously talented freaks who are performance geniuses, or they’re going to murder us and wear our skins as coats to their next show. But isn’t that part of the fun?!
Ninja, the rapper in the group, had this to say in a Spin magazine interview about the is-it-real aspect that surrounds Die Antwoord:
“This American reporter was telling us that reality TV makes Americans care about if things are real or not. But you watch reality TV and you get a dull feeling in your balls. You watch us and it’s thrilling. There’s a sweet analogy for how musicians can think about this: People are unconscious and you have to use your art as a shock machine to wake them up. Some people are too far gone. They’ll just keep asking, “Is it real? Is it real?” That’s dwanky. That’s a word we have in South Africa, “dwanky.” It’s like lame. “Is it real?” Dwanky. You have to be futuristic and carry on. You gotta be a good guide to help people get away from dull experience. Don’t be rude to the people who don’t get it. It’s better to be nice to those retards.”

Ninja is right. They are genuinely the only group I’ve ever seen that if I saw them in public, I’d be equal parts mesmerized and scared as fuck. Exhilarating.
They even turned down a million dollar guarantee from Interscope records concerning their newly released album Ten$ion. They explain what went down:
“So anyway… Interscope offered us a bunch of money again to release our new album TEN$ION. But this time, they also tried to get involved with our music, to try and make us sound like everyone else out there at the moment. So we said: ‘U know what, rather hang on to your money, buy yourself something nice…we gonna do our own thing. Bye bye’.”
Their latest album Ten$ion was released on their own independent label ZEF Recordz. Die Antwoord even performed on David Letterman.
Check out their latest video off of Ten$ion for their song ” I Fink U Freeky”. You may be scared, but get over it.
Right off the heels of winning Tour of the Year from the Pollstar Awards for Lady G’s Monsterball Tour (which I saw in Chicago 2010 and it was amazing!), Mother Monster has released the official poster of The Born This Way Ball. The 2012-2013 tour is rumored to keep our Lady busy for 2 years and make over 420 tour stops. That is some serious touring, folks. To the delight of us all, MM has also released a drawing of what the stage and arenas will look like.
Lady G says:
“To give you a bit of insight on the design of my new tour, the central area within the stage will be known as “The Monster Pit.” “The Monster Pit” is General Admission only, and Little Monsters unlock it when they arrive to the arena or stadium. Entry to “The Monster Pit” is relegated to the fans who have arrived first, waited all night, + dressed to “Ball.”
I SO SO SO want to get Monster Pit tickets (let’s hope it doesn’t turn out like the Florence + the Machine ticket waiting fiasco).
The stage looks beautiful, like a medieval princess pop star singing to her beloved commoners. And she even has designed a circular stage so she can go out amongst her fans. There really is more “front row seating” than normal which is WAY WAY cool.
Oh please oh please oh please let me get tickets to this. I’m starting to save RIGHT NOW.

LOVE HER! Her new video for “Cheerleader” shows St. Vincent as a giant art exhibit who breaks free. She looks heavenly as always!
Do you have your St. Vincent tickets yet?!
Holly Laurent, a girl after my own heart. Here’s Holly’s take on Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games”, reworked into “Hunger Games”. BRILLZ!!!!!!

YES YES YES YES!!!!
My 8-year-old Christmas list consisted of witch’s potion, magic spells, and Spice Girls clothes. Well, one of them has come true. FINALLY.
Geri Halliwell, formerly Ginger Spice or the one who left the group and subsequently ended my childhood innocence, is coming out with her own line of Union Jack clothes for Next. “The Union Jack dress was my favorite stage outfit and with everything that is happening this year such as the Olympics and the Jubilee it just felt the right time to design an updated version of the dress for my range with Next.”
They BETTER sell this stuff at H&M or Urban Outfitters. It’s our collective childhood dreams come true. Now all we need are some sick platforms and 4 friends to get this shit started. Girl Power, woooooo!!!!!!
Can we get a big designer to do an actual Spice Girls-inspired line? I would spend my yearly salary on it. Which isn’t saying much, but I would regardless.
Remember how everyone always wanted to be Baby? I had a sports bra so I had to be Sporty. She’s great and all, but I’m girly as fuck so it didn’t gel. But if you had a blonde friend, they “had to be baby”. Jerks! And now I just want to be all of them. So I will be. Ahh. the joys of growing up.
Here’s “Say You’ll Be There” for your nostalgic enjoyment.
